Grape Growers of Ontario: Board of Directors Elected for 2008-2009
St. Catharines, ON (Friday, April 18, 2008): Chief Executive Officer Debbie Zimmerman is pleased to announce that the Grape Growers of Ontario has elected their 2008 – 2009 Board of Directors.
Bill George Jr. has been re-elected to serve as Board Chair for 2008-2009. Bill George Jr., Chair of the Grape Growers of Ontario, states that “I look forward to working with growers, government and key stakeholders as we grow excellence, achieve quality in our vineyards and continue as a world renowned grape growing region.” He resides in the Town of Lincoln where his family has been growing grapes for approximately 100 years and where he continues to farm with his father, Bill George Sr. Bill George Jr. has served on the Board of Directors for 13 years and is the longest serving member of the Board. He farms an 80-acre wine grape operation in Beamsville with his wife Leslieann and two children.
Doug Hernder has been elected Vice Chair. Along with his family, he farms a 260 acre farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake with his father, Jack and older brother Bruce. Doug Hernder is married with two children.
In addition to the Chair and Vice Chair, 6 Board of Directors were elected. They include: Steve Fernick of Grimsby; Bart Huisman of St. Catharines; Jim Morrison of Lincoln; Matthias Oppenlaender, Steve Pohorly and Kevin Watson of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The Grape Growers of Ontario is the official organization that represents over 600 registered growers of 17.1 million vines on 15,000 acres in the province’s four viticulture areas: Niagara Peninsula, Pelee Island, Lake Erie North Shore and Prince Edward County.
