Minister McMeekin Tours Niagara Vineyards and Experiences the Art of Icewine
St. Catharines, ON: Today, the Honourable Ted McMeekin, Ontario Minister of Government and Consumer Services, toured vineyards in Niagara-on-the-Lake and Beamsville with representatives from the Grape Growers of Ontario during the first weekend of the Niagara Icewine Festival.
During the tour Minister McMeekin had the opportunity to pick grapes for icewine and experience the operation of pressing icewine grapes. Debbie Zimmerman, CEO of the Grape Growers of Ontario said, “It was a pleasure to have Minister McMeekin in our vineyards and to explain to the Minister the intricacies required in the harvesting of grapes for icewine.”
Grape Growers of Ontario Chair, Bill George Jr. commented, “Minister McMeekin’s visit provided us with an opportunity to showcase our world class icewine industry and to reinforce the importance of the icewine grape harvest to the economy of Ontario.”
The Grape Growers of Ontario is the official organization that represents over 600 registered grower members of nearly 15.7 million vines on 17,800 acres in the province’s four viticulture areas: Niagara Peninsula, Pelee Island, Lake Erie North Shore and Prince Edward County and is the official lobby organization for our members.
