Grape Grower of the Year
Doug Hernder

Location: Hernder Vineyard. 1287 Creek Road, RR#2, Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Age:
42 years old.

Family: Doug is married to Laura and has 2 children Lee Ann and Christopher.

History: Doug has been farming in Niagara-on-the-Lake since he was 8 years old along with his parents Jack and Patricia and his older brother Bruce. During his childhood, basket grapes and concords were mostly grown but then in the mid 70's the vineyard's focus changed to wine grapes.

Grape Varieties Planted: 13 varieties of hybrid and vinifera grapes concentrating on Chardonnay, Riesling and Vidal (for Icewine).

Farming Philosophy: Strive to get the best quality of grapes possible.

Comments on the Wine and Grape Industry: Growing good grapes, harvesting them and tasting the end result are some of the most enjoyable aspects of the industry. In the near future, Doug would like to see only 100% Canadian wines sold in wine growing regions. VQA wines and Icewine are the strengths of the industry.
