A local vineyard in Vineland has an immediate opening for a sprayer/tractor driver. This position will offer full time hours throughout the summer and harvest season working Monday through Saturday. The right candidate for this position will enjoy working outdoors and be available to work long hours. Regular work hours are 7:00am to 6:00pm.

Job Duties:

  • Understands and has a working knowledge (with license) of a vineyard spray program
  • Cutting grass and machine hoeing throughout vineyard.
  • Light maintenance of equipment and regular inspection of equipment and machinery
  • Assisting with a variety of projects around the vineyard, as required
  • General clean up of equipment and machinery
  • about a DZ class license being an asset, but not necessary

Requirements:

  • 2 to 5 years experience working on a farm or vineyard and operating a tractor
  • Spray license or certificate
  • Physically fit and enjoy working outdoors
  • Must be hard working, self motivated, able to follow directions and be able to work independently

The Canada-China Agriculture and Food Development Exchange Centre is looking for a full time seasonal vineyard manager starting April to the end of October 2013 to properly manage a vineyard located in Beamsville, ON.

Summary of Occupation

The qualified candidate for this position must know how to plan, organize and manage the growing of grape varieties for the production of wine. They must also know how to prepare soil, plant and prune vines, coordinate irrigation and pest control, maintain the quality of fruit, and monitor the health and growth of vines. This qualified candidate will also be responsible for training and supervising vineyard workers, as well as working with the winemakers to ensure production is on schedule, pricing is correct, and to arrange proper transportation of the grapes to the winery.

Tools and Technologies

The qualified candidate must know how to use a range of pruning and trimming tools, and other hand tools. They must also know how to use larger farming machinery such as tractors, mowers, sprayers and mechanical pruners, as well as frost control equipment. They will need to be familiar with irrigation systems, and measuring equipment to test the sugar content of grapes, and tensiometers to measure the moisture content of soil.

Vineyard Manager

Coyote’s Run Estate Winery is a small but rapidly growing craft winery based in St. David’s/Niagara-on-the-Lake ON. At Coyote’s Run, we are passionate about good wine. Our philosophy is to leverage this passion and produce wines that we can proudly stand behind – hand-crafted wines of quality and distinctiveness that are representative of our unique terroir and microclimate.

Our estate property in St. David’s is well-known for having two different soils, and the soil-specific wines from which we have been producing. We currently have 36 acres of estate vineyards planted, with a plan to expand plantings in the future. Though we are well-known as premium producers of Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Cab Sauv, and especially Pinot Noir, we know that we need to continually improve our wines. The best way to do that is to invest more effort in viticulture, as great wines can only be made from great grapes.

To help continue to raise the quality of our wines, we are looking to hire a Vineyard Manager – someone that can ensure the long-term health of our vineyards and deliver consistently high-quality harvests to our cellar team.

The successful candidate will be expected to do the following:

  • Build and manage a team of vineyard workers
  • Draft and execute a vineyard plan that delivers the best fruit to the cellar  team
  • Liaise with vineyard suppliers as needed
  • Work with other Coyote’s Run growers to ensure optimum quality of delivered fruit

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications/skills:

  • Minimum 5 years experience in vineyard management
  • Intimate knowledge of cool-climate viticulture and industry best practices
  • Complete familiarity with vineyard tractors and related equipment
  • Self-starter, able to work independently
  • Goal-driven and highly-motivated
  • A team player, able to work and interact with many different players
  • Functional knowledge of office software
  • Willing to work non-standard hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed

Requirements include the following:

  • Possession of a valid ON Driver’s License is a requirement
  • Possession of a valid Ministry spray certificate
