Grapevine Cold Hardiness Alert

May 13, 2015
This is an alert concerning grapevine cold hardiness and cold temperatures.  Bud swell and bud break has begun across Ontario for many varieties.  Environment Canada has issued a frost advisory for some regions in Southern Ontario tonight and Thursday morning.  If temperatures drop below freezing injury may occur, especially to green tissue such as young shoots and leaves.

For optimal use of wind machines, it is suggested that the start-up temperatures be set at 1 to 2 C for frost protection. It is also important to monitor wind speeds along with temperatures.
