Kevin Buis was crowned Grape King at his family’s Glenlake Vineyards in Niagara-on-the-Lake on September 17, 2014.
Kevin was born and raised in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and grew up on the family farm which was started by their parents, Peter and Margaret in 1957. He attended Denis Morris Secondary School then graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Guelph in 1986.
Following university, Kevin joined his brother Peter who together are carrying on the family business which now consists of 400 acres of 14 varieties of wine grapes.
Kevin has been very involved in the agriculture industry, and has served on various committees and boards including the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association Advisory Committee and Ontario Tender Fruit Producers' Marketing Board. Kevin is a past president of the Niagara Peninsula Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association, and presently sits on the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake Irrigation Committee.
“I have learned from my family and from all of the previous men and women who have worn this chain, the importance of contributing to our community and to the agriculture industry. The growers have long known the importance of good policy and the impact of the bottom line of the farm gate.”
Kevin is married to Jacqueline Oscvirk, and between them have five children: Keelan, Aidan, Erica (Steve Dowling), Alicia (Dan Segal), and John Mattia (Alicia). Kevin enjoys travelling, sports (lacrosse coach for the last 10 years) and is an avid winemaker.
